Hi,

Centrelink and maybe others ask clients to produce a "current lease" as proof of one's address. But how do you proves your lease is "current" ?

Not long ago, my 12 year old lease was not recognised - despite me having *recent* rent and utility receipts with the same name and address.
I was told: " .. that lease is over 12 months old - so not current. "

Legally, this is arrant nonsense, residential leases are " in force " until you leave. But not according to Centrelink and it appears to be the view of many staffers.

...... Phil

No point in arguing with the entry-level staff. Seek review of their
decision.

Unless there's clear documentation that defines "current" as being
within 12 months, it's entirely possible that the low-level flunkies
have just misunderstood. A formal review can address that.

Sylvia.

Obvious lie, Centreline doesn’t do Medicare Cards.

Thing is, Centrelink is federal and leases are defined in state laws which vary a bit.
One staffer told me that in Qld, leases expire after 12 months .
This is of course not true, the same continuing condition applies afterwards.
I checked.

> it's entirely possible that the low-level flunkies

** See my original question.
On it own, an old lease is not proof of one's address.
Utility receipts are not enough on their own.
A phone call to the renting agency confirming actual residence should be allowed, but is not.

It is called the "Burwood Service Centre" which has both Centrelink and
Medicare services.

** Not when I was last there.

There is only one facility, exact same staff, same counter, same interview desks and same queue for all inquires.
Centrelink business is way dominant.

Locals, bus drivers and cabbies all refer to it as " Burwood Centrelink".

My adventures with the taxation dept reinforces this.

If I phone in with an enquiry it's possible to get someone who speaks
with an impenetrable accent, and who clearly doesn't understand the
question.

Phoning in again in the next 5 min gets a different person who does
understand the question and throws the matter into the "in" box.

Weeks pass with no result, so I ring again (with all their reference
numbers) only to be advised the matter has "progressed in the queue"
etc.

After weeks & weeks I take advice and ring the "complaints dept".

This did the trick.

If you have any tax matters that cannot just be done online, then it's
better to let an accountant handle it all.

I use both. Many times the accountant....

1/ Is busy.
2/ On leave
3/ Has left the company.
4/ Will get back.
