If you comare these two photos:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/recliner/29303477156/in/album-72157669978770284/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/recliner/29049560570/in/album-72157669978770284/

and zoom right in on both of them. you can see that the beam is actually
flexing ever so slightly over a series of joints. Bear in mind that this
is, I presume, taken with a long lens, so it looks shorter than it is.

On the video I posted earlier, you can see it happening at around 1:57:

https://youtu.be/70SOmeF3K9U?t=117

And then further on in the speeded-up section, you can see different
configurations. It's not just a switched crossover, all the paths are
possible. There are three lines closest to the camera and four further
away from it, linked by a set of opposing switches over a two-line
throat.

Centre to upper left: https://youtu.be/70SOmeF3K9U?t=161
Centre to lower left: https://youtu.be/70SOmeF3K9U?t=166
Left to lower left and upper right to centre:

I've ridden on the Kobe monorail. It works, people use it as real
transit to get to work and to the airport, and the track bends at the
switches just like in the video. I believe the reason there is a
flyover is that there's no practical way to do a level crossing.

AFAIK Wuppertal, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Dresden*, Shonan, Tokyo, Osaka,
Chiba, Naha, Kitakyushu, plus three systems in China (including the one
which goes right through the middle of a tower block) are considered
successful. Naha monorail has just been extended.

The tracks are far, far less visually-intrusive than an elevated railway
such as DLR or Bangkok Skytrain; the stations (a commonly cited argument
against monorails) are no more complex than for an elevated conventional
railway; and the other usual argument of compatibility isn't necessarily
relevant if it's always planned to be a separate system anyway (eg DLR).

Sifting through the various lists at
<https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_monorail_systems> [1], only two
(three at a push) of the closed systems listed were intended to be proper
public transport rather than primarily for amusement, or wholly within a
venue.

* Ok Dresden is a bit of an outlier there.

[1] unfortunately that page seems to count maglevs as monorails, so the
sifting needs to be slightly more detailed than might otherwise be the
case.

Japan: six systems, eight lines, total 59 miles, 88 stations. One line runs
express trains as well as stopping trains, which overtake the stoppers at
one of the intermediate stations.

Korea: one line, 15 miles, 30 stations.

Brazil: 9 miles, 11 stations, extension under construction.

China: at least four lines, 95 miles, 114 stations.

Whole-track-moves is becoming an increasingly popular solution for
pointwork on mountain rack railways, too, so it's not a unique-to-monorails
thing.

It depends on the failure, of course; when I was in Okinawa, the monorail
was recovering from a delay caused by a failed train - they brought the
train behind it up and pushed the failed one to the depot.

The video linked above shows the junction of two lines, and the station in
the foreground has three tracks (central one for terminating trains IIRC);
that'd be a complicated layout in any case, whether by conventional rail or
monorail (particularly if you wanted your junction to be grade-separated
and thus conflict-free, as this one is).

See the speeded-up version of the video here for a better overview of the
junction: <https://youtu.be/sVYx2yhceaA> (or indeed skip to 2:40 on the
original video).

A quick browse of Google image results for the various Japanese monorail
systems shows they all have what looks very much like a door on the front,
but I think it'd be for evacuation into another train rather than along the
beam (particularly in the case of the suspended line!).

Neither of the unusual lines at Kobe is a monorail (they're both
rubber-tyre guided systems).

The flexible part of the monorail beam will be steel rather than concrete.
And it's just one (series of) components to move, not three.

There'll be a whole lot of support mechanism underneath probably including
wheels or rollers.
