More than 150,000 people in the UK have now died within 28 days of a positive Covid test since the pandemic began.

The UK is the seventh country to pass 150,000 reported deaths, after the US, Brazil, India, Russia, Mexico and Peru.

The number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test has also begun to rise, with the total of 1,271 in the past seven days up 38.3% on the previous week.

In January 2021, the UK was the first European nation and fifth country to pass 100,000 Covid deaths.

Our current CFR is just 0.1% which means we are on track to 220,000 deaths which is below the quarter of a million which Johnson considers acceptable.

That Omicron is milder than Delta has reduced our overall CFR from 1.6% to just 1.0%, which predicts 830,000 deaths.

The US isn't faring so well. Their current CFR is 0.2% which means 1.5 million deaths. Omicron has also reduced their overall CFR from 1.6% to 1.4%, which predicts 5.5 million deaths.

So, so far, it does look like Omicron is good news, though we are yet to see how it hitting the older and more vulnerable population will impact CFR.

And, of course, a more deadly mutation arriving could easily push CFR rates back up.
