seat in which there is not one but three cemeteries is unforgivable.”

I had an uncle that lived in Wellington. He voted Liberal all his
life until he passed away 10 years ago. Now he votes Labor.

Thanks, but it has a limit of 5000 words. The translation of French
is not great.

I used to work with a French-Canadian guy. He was over the moon when the
company sent him to Paris for a conference and he could speak his native
tongue. Unfortunately Quebecois has strayed from its origins, the French
couldn't understand him and asked him to speak English.

I once walked into a shop in Quebec heard them speaking English.
Asked for a price on this
They said "Parlez-vous français"
I replied I suppose that means fuck off then so I left.

I used to work for a Canadian company, luckily they were Ontarians
rather than Quebecois.

BTW, Quebecois hasn't strayed far from its origins - it is still a lot
like 17th Century Parisienne French of its origins - but the
*contemporary* French they speak in France has strayed. A fairly common
theme, even my mother found she still spoke the old language of her
country of origin whilst those in-country spoke quite differently.

I went into a bookshop in Quebec, I found a Quebecois dictionary, but it
wasn't Quebecois to English, it was Quebecois to French. The French that
they speak in France has to be the standard, they even have a government
committee to ensure its purity.

I think I did mention "17th Century Parisienne French" and I did that
for a reason. I have no problem with the French in France having a
language standard but, over time, languages change. However, Quebec
became an isolated enclave of the French language in the midst of a
largely English speaking part of the North American continent. That
isolation was aided and abetted by the French Revolution. In effect
then, the French language in Quebec stood still in time. From what I was
told by a Quebecois many decades ago, the grammar is still the same as
in France so if a Quebecois wrote a letter it could be easily understood
by a Frenchman. Not so much understanding however if said letter was
read out by a Quebecois to a Frenchman! The greatest difference is in
the pronunciation. The other point of note is that languages adopt words
and even phrases from surrounding languages and I would expect Quebecois
to be no different and would not be at all surprised to find lots of
English words have crept in over the centuries and, again, given the
isolation of Quebec from modern day France, these words would not be in
a Frenchman's linguistic repertoire. That would explain the need for a
Quebecois to French dictionary.

Just reading one of Susie Kelly's memoirs. They bought a very run down
ex farmhouse in southern France and discovered that her very helpful
frog neighbour has a quite heavy frog dialect which makes some stuff
impossible to understand, even the name of the town where he says
has the best live animal market. Fortunately his wife can translate.

Italy is much worse. We have lots of Italian migrants, quite a few of them
can't understand each other and have to speak english to each other.
Italian wife of a mate of mine whose parents have no english at all
found that when they visited Italy, most of the time she couldnt
understand any of the Italians. Not due to a change in the language,
just due to most Italians speaking their local dialect.

But plenty of frogs, particularly in rural areas, speak a dialect, not
standard french.

Yeah, I have been watching
The Queen's Guards: A Year in Service
on the SBS and some of the sqadies are very hard to understand.
The officers are fine.

Also been watching
Betraying the Badge
also on the SBS and don't have any problem with any of the NewYorkers.

I'm watching a Canadian/Quebec movie on TV. Thank God for SBS
translations. Surely students of other languages benefit from the
movies on SBS.

My grandmother came from a village just beneath the Matterhorn and she
spoke a mixture of French/Italian.
