So, soon we'll be able to get home from Berlin as easily as:
Express from Berlin to Paris
Lug all our stuff across Paris and queue for check-in again
Express from Paris to London
Lug all our stuff across London and queue for check-in again
Express from London to Birmingham, etc.

I'd much rather take a direct flight.

But this direct train is reasonably competitive with air on the
Berlin-Paris route.

If you are concerned about changing stations, you can do St
Pancras-Brussels-Cologne-Berlin, the connections between Eurostar and
the ICE to Cologne and Frankfurt have been arranged to involve the
minimum fuss. There are, though, no direct flights from Birmingham to
Berlin, so there's a whole lot of checkign in, luggign stuff and
hanging around involved with that option.

This week. I forget where my isolated Berlin Ryanair flight was from.
Could have been East Midlands.

Paris-Moscow won't be for a while, I guess.

It was just a matter of scheduling and routing. I've already arrived in
Paris aboard an ICE3-M train. I think it may have been Mannheim where we
boarded the train.

This is basically the railways seeing if they can pull in people for a 5
hour train trip when the previous limit was considered to be 3hrs.

Sure, join Paris - Mannheim - Frankfurt with Frankfurt - Erfurt - Berlin
once a day. In the long term, Germany will cut close to one hour off
this journey (activate ETCS Saarbrücken - Mannheim, 300 km/h line
Mannheim - Frankfurt to start builfing now, City tunnel Frankfurt in
early planning, upgrade Frankfurt-Gelnhausen to 250 km/h in progress,
300 km/h line Gelnhausen to Fulda in planning, Fulda to Eisenach in
early planning).

This is part of the EU program "TEE 2.0" increasing high-speed train
connectivity between EU countries (it will probabl mostly simplify
ticketing). If sucessful, a TGV train set should go to Berlin once a
day as well.

The press have compared this with Frankfurt - Marseilles (also one train
pair per day), neglecting the fact that on Frankfurt - Marseilles
there's no regular one-change option (I'm still waiting for the ICE
Frankfurt - Marseilles - Frankfurt to offer easier holiday opportunities).
