Have also asked this in 24Hr support but that is fairly moribund, so not
really expecting a relevant reply.

I know there are some computer wizzies in here (and a lot like me,
clueless) so operating on the nothing ventured nothing gained principal
have decided to ask in here as well

I wish to view each folder in threaded form.
This is to include subthreads
I have tried the threaded option in View > Sort by > threaded but this
only gives me one level of threading I.E. it will group by thread but
will NOT show sub threads.
What should I be doing.

Enable the "Thread" option on the header bar ?

So ... in the message browser area at the top where the Subject / From
/ Date etc column headings are ... put the mouse pointer in that area
and right click. A context menu should appear and I think you might want
to tick the check box for "Thread"

If its the same as mine then another column header appears on the far
left with a new button for you to play with.

You may be able to get to the same place by using a button on the far
right of the column headers - if you hover over it there will be a "Tool
Tip" that says something like "Select columns to display"

And if thats not the answer to a maidens prayer then I have the wrong
maiden (not for the fisrst time)

I thought mine was the "standard" vew

To the left of the "Subject" column I have 3 other columns - one with a
paperclip, one with a star and one other.

How many columns do you have ?

Top right corner, to the right of "Quick filter", there's an icon like a
ladder. Click on that and select "Table view".

You're getting "conversation view", click on the chevron inside a thread
to expand it.

If you don't like conversation view here's the other setting I hinted at
....

within config editor toggle off "mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads"

One misfortunate part of the new TB GUI, is that some settings are not
visible, depending on some other settings you may have changed, that is
one of them.

It does, but it's non-obvious

View/Layout/MessageListHeader

then you'll probably get *two* Quick Filter buttons, to the right of the
second one is the "ladder" aka Message List Display Options

There you can switch between Table View and Cards View, but I don't
think that will alter your lack of threading, if the chevron works, the
collapsed thread setting will too ...

I have disabled that as messages are opened automatically so they can be
viewed. Probably just being paranoid but I do not like the idea of
messages (possibly with live HTML in them) being opened automaticaly.

Someone probably told me I should do that but I can't remember who I
have done it for years.

TB doesn't allow javascript to run in a message pane, not sure in what
other way a html email could be considered "live"

I have version 50.summat set here to open messages when I click on them,
but only to show remote content (as in not included in the email) such
as html or images, if I tell it to.

I don't know whether this is still an option in newer versions. All
incoming mail is checked for malware anyway. I have been using TB since
version 2.summat and that setting has always been enabled.

Outlook mail attachments can not be opened, unless I feed them to a
separate program, as my boss got annoyed about a few years ago.

By default TB prevents loading remote content, you can enable it as a
on-off for the current missive, sender-by-sender, site-by-site, or
globally ... some rando spam ain't going to load a tracking pixel.
