I'm reliably informed that now perhaps two years after the longer
platforms were opened at Littleport station, the trains from London
still play the erroneous instruction to move to the front four coaches
to get off.

The person who told me this has mobility issues, and was NOT AMUSED at
unnecessarily having to walk through from the rear half of the train.

I think I forgot to mention this when we passed last September - we were in
the rear 4 coaches (5th, I think), heard the announcement and were
surprised to see a perfectly serviceable platform outside the window.

A consequence of variable carriage lengths and door positions such
that a different train could have left you off the platform?

Aren't all GTR carriages 20m, with doors at 1/3 and 2/3?

And I think all 4-car units - very homogenous fleet on that route. The
announcement, as Roland notes, says you have to be in the first 4
carriages.

What's even more puzzling is that when the Down platform was only 4cars
long, they never attempted to stop 8car trains there. The possibly
one-a-day on the line went through without stopping (much to the dismay
of people who "knew" that north of Ely every service was all-stops).

Nope. The trains have been Electrostars for several years now. And the
whole 4cars of anything stopping there (eg previously 365's and a very
few 317's) fitted the platforms.

They couldn't hang off the front because that would obstruct the barrow
crossing, nor to the rear, because of the road level crossing.

Yes, although a handful of GA trains also ply the route.

I suppose I'll have to go see if they are now 720's (what else could
they be); but that's 5cars on a 8car platform (and the announcement
complained about is on GN Electrostars).
