The government is opposed to telling all cyclists to wear helmets as it would put a strain on garda resources and the courts, the transport minister has said.

Eamon Ryan said it was a long-standing government policy to recommend and promote helmets. Making helmets mandatory would raise a number of difficulties.

An enforcement system with penalties would have to be introduced. “Whilst enforcement might be possible, it could create considerable strain on garda resources, and indeed on the courts,” Ryan said.

An interesting approach.

On exactly the same basis (reducing the workload of the police and the
courts), a minister could justify scrapping the law on drink-driving. Or
on compulsory insurance, exceeding speed limits, parking on restricted
roads, etc.

Legalising cannabis and opening clinics where hard drug addicts could get a fix of pure drugs administered by trained professionals under sterile conditions would save a lot more.

Yip, legalising cannabis sounds just about right for a scofflaw, council
estate, unemployable cyclist. Most cyclists are unemployable, council
estate, dope smoking trash.
You really are filth.

Mandatory walking helmets would save more lives. Outlawing driver seatbelts and mandating a steel spike in the middle of the steering wheel would save even more.
Motorists need to be reminded they are guests on roads paid for by cyclists..
