A learner driver with a fogged windscreen who killed a man in a hit-and-run has been jailed.

Ali Zafar was 17 when he struck Derek Blackshaw, 46, in a Morrisons car park in Glasgow in October 2021.

Zafar was driving a colleague's car and told them not to call emergency services.

Now 19, he was jailed for four years after previously admitting causing death by dangerous driving. He was also banned from driving for eight years.

Relatives of the victim said they were "saddened" by the punishment level.

Mr Blackshaw, a married father-of-three, had attended the funeral of a family friend on the day of the incident.

He was taking a shortcut home through the supermarket car park when he was hit by Zafar, from Pollok, who had a provisional licence.
Zafar had asked if he could borrow a colleague's car to listen to music while working at a local takeaway.

It was agreed, on the condition that Zafar did not move the car - but he did.

After the collision, emergency services found Mr Blackshaw unresponsive and gave him CPR until emergency crews arrived, but he died.

Defence counsel Duncan McPhie said first offender Zafar was remorseful and wished to apologise.

Judge John McCormick said victim impact statements showed relatives were "bereft" and "devastated".

He told Zafar that a custodial sentence was required, and added: "It is necessary to punish you, to seek to deter you and others from driving in such a dangerous manner and, of course, to protect the public."

A family statement released through lawyers Digby Brown said: "While no sentence could ever reflect the loss of Derek or our pain, we still feel saddened by the final outcome and the relatively short length of time that driver will likely spend behind bars.

"Derek was wholesome, honourable and adored and the loss of such a man is felt by more than his family and friends."
