It was third time unlucky for a serial offender who was jailed for 16 weeks after being caught behind the wheel despite being disqualified from driving.

Officers from Northamptonshire Police’s Roads Policing Team spotted Jamie Charles Ault, aged 37, driving a grey Renault Captur SUV car along the A509 Station Road at Isham shortly before 5pm on Tuesday, July 25.

Ault was followed by the officers as he drove towards Kettering before he eventually stopped and parked in the Tesco Extra store car park in Carina Road. He initially provided officers with false details however, changed his mind when informed they could check his fingerprints.

Following routine checks against his real name, Ault, of Dearlove Road, Kettering, was arrested and subsequently charged with driving while disqualified and driving with no valid third-party insurance.

On Wednesday, July 26, Ault pleaded guilty to both offences at Northampton Magistrates’ Court and was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison. He was also disqualified from driving for 59 months and ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge.

Arresting officer PC Horner of the Roads Policing Team said: “This was the third time that Jamie Ault had been arrested and charged for driving while disqualified, showing a complete disregard of the law and I am pleased the courts have dealt with this driver robustly.

“We have a duty to protect law-abiding road users from those who have been caught flouting the law, having previously been sentenced for traffic-related offences, and we will take action against anyone who fails to comply with a court order.”

Tragically in 2022, after being involved in a road collision in Northamptonshire, 36 people never returned home safely. Reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads remains a priority for the Force and our partners at the Northamptonshire Safer Roads Alliance.

Why are the police wearing Hi-Viz? I'm guessing it's a nod to the dangers of being exposed to traffic whilst out of their vehicle. The same dangers the cyclists are exposed to. So why are the police not taking their own advice and wearing polystyrene helmets? Is it because they recognise that they offer negligible protection in collision with a vehicle, something well outside their design spec.

Cycling cops in the UK do wear magic hats unlike their Dutch counterparts.
