Three years in jail.

An Iceland delivery driver tragically killed a much-loved "rugby man" after colliding with his bike on Christmas Eve while looking at his satnav .

David Power, 64, from Cwmbran, died after suffering a cardiac arrest on December 24 last year following a collision with a van driven by Lewis Smith.

Having been struck by the vehicle Mr Power was initially conscious and was able to tell police his name and date of birth but he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly later after his health deteriorated. Smith, 24, remained at the scene and tried to assist Mr Power following the collision at 11am in Cwmbran Drive.

A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court on Friday heard police were flagged down near Cwmbran Stadium and were told there had been a crash involving a cyclist.

Prosecutor Claire Pickthall said officers found Mr Power lying on the grass behind a barrier with his bicycle still in the carriageway. He was described as bleeding from the mouth, having graze-like cuts to his torso, and suffering bruising and bleeding to the back of his head.

The emergency services arrived and Mr Power was placed in the back of an ambulance but he went into cardiac arrest and despite the best efforts of paramedics he died shortly later.

The official cause of death was given as abdominal bleeding, lacerated liver and spleen, blunt trauma, coronary artery disease, and aortic stenosis.

Smith spoke to police at the scene and said he had seen Mr Power in the road and had moved over to give him space but having glanced at his satnav he heard a bang and saw the cyclist on the ground in his rear view mirror. The defendant took a breathalyser test and he tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

During a police interview Smith expressed his concern for Mr Power's family.. He said: "I can't imagine how they must be feeling – it must be a million times worse for the other side. They have lost someone. I can't describe how sorry I am."

The court was also played a video of the defendant from dashcam footage taken just before and during the collision and he can be seen looking at a satnav for nine seconds before impact.

Smith, of Cedar Way, Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly, admitted causing death by dangerous driving.

In a victim personal statement read out to the court Mr Power's sister Susan Hobbs described her brother's achievements and his role as chairman of the Welsh Charitables RFC.

Mrs Hobbs said: "He was looking to the future. He had a knack of making me feel special. He was honorary secretary of the Welsh Charitables RFC and it was his life. He would arrange for international rugby players to come to events.

"He loved being involved in family and social events. David has left a massive void... it's terrible not having him here."

In mitigation Ieuan Bennett said his client had a clean driving licence and was of previous good character. He said Smith had taken up a job with Iceland after graduating.

He said: "The defendant was a young man with a decent future in front of him. This has caused the defendant himself to deal with stress. He has been back and forth to the doctors suffering with insomnia, flashbacks, and depression. If he could turn the clocks back he would."

Sentencing, Judge Jeremy Jenkins told Smith he had no option but to pass an immediate custodial sentence. He added: "On one hand I am dealing with a family who is grieving the loss of a loved and cherished member and on the other hand I'm also dealing with a young and intelligent man who has great prospects in life and will make a valuable contribution to society in the future.

"Nobody intended this tragedy and no sentence I can pass can assuage the deep sense of loss and grief felt by the family of David Power.

"To take one's eyes off the road for nine seconds when you're driving amounts to creating a substantial risk of danger. You have expressed genuine remorse."

Smith was sentenced to three years imprisonment and was disqualified from driving for four and a half years.
