A motorist ended up on the wrong side of the law after being caught up in an outbreak of road rage in Wick.

Thomas Nutter found himself trapped in a traffic snarl-up in Argyle Square about 9.30am on February 10.

He found his way blocked by parked vehicles and oncoming traffic, the town's sheriff court heard on Wednesday.

Procurator fiscal David Barclay said: "The accused's car and other motorists had been having difficulty manoeuvring past each other.

"It appears the accused and another motorist had got into something of a verbal tangle about this."

Mr Barclay said Nutter decided to try and squeeze through a small gap between his car and two others, which were stationary.

But he made contact with both, one being scratched along the side and other's rear bumper being struck.

Nutter was heard saying: "I have just got to get out of here."

The 36-year-old admitted careless driving.

Solicitor George Mathers said Nutter believed the other motorist had been “extremely difficult” and he wanted to get away as he was frightened.

Mr Mathers said it was at the “bottom end” of careless driving.

His client, who receives Universal Credit, recently had his licence revoked by the DVLA after he failed a drugs test.

Nutter, of Macrae Street, Wick, was fined £200, given a victim surcharge of £10 and incurred four driving penalty points.

His not guilty pleas to failing to stop and report the accident were accepted by the Crown.
