The first of 220 @HitachiRailENG Cl.80x has gone to Eastleigh Works for
crack repairs. @GWRHelp 802003 is the first to be treated. In total there
are 90 Cl.800, 42 Cl.801, 60 Cl.802, 5 Cl.803, 13 Cl.805 and 10 Cl.807s
will receive the mods. 6 operators are affected.

Note that other UK Hitachi A-train fleets will also need repairs, and the
programme will take a number of years, not just in Eastleigh. Overall, well
over a thousand vehicles will need repairs. I wonder if this might be the
largest-ever such repair programme in the UK?

As a reminder, these widespread problems are a result of design errors
(early fatigue cracking because of inadequate stress analysis in key
suspension components), the wrong material choice (an aluminium alloy known
to be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in UK conditions), and poor
manufacturing quality (bad welds).
