I'm preparing to possibly upgrade a friend's laptop to W10.

In preparation I set about downloading an ISO to burn to DVD (laptop has a
DVD drive).

On this PC I'm running Windows 7 - due to upgrade when the Round Tuit
arrives.

The Microsoft site seems to insist that you run their tool.
I find that I am still running GWX Control Panel back from when M$ tried
forced upgrades.

I think I can get round this, but why isn't there a place where you can
just download the ISO?
[I do have a W10 system upstairs which will hopefully do, just no DVD
burner so a 2 stage process.]

Cheers

I "think" that the tool has two options, one to create a thumbdrive and
the other to download an iso. I certainly have 2 or 3 iso files for Win 10
and would only have got them from MSFT.

It does have an option to create an ISO but it isn't a simple download.
It ferrets around in W10 areas and GWX throws a wobbler.

If you visit the same page from a linux machine, I believe it will
deliver the .ISO file instead of the tool?

All true, but the end result is a usable / burnable .iso
although some variants are very large files which would need a dual
layer DVD - which raises the potential problem of machines which are
unable to boot from DL media.

Also, it might be a good idea to make sure that you have downloaded the
latest available version of the MS Media Creation Tool

In the meantime, you could have a bit of fun trying out :

https://heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-download-tool

which I have used with some success.

The link to it which I found was on a Microsoft download page, but I
cannot remember which one.

If you can work out what the "ISO Tools" does then please let me know.

Thanks to all.

Investigation suggests that a new PC is a better option.

See other thread.
