A man has admitted causing the death of a 37-year-old cyclist in a crash in Newport.

Dominik Jablonicky pleaded guilty at Newport Crown Court to causing the death by dangerous driving of Matthew Brimble in a crash while travelling along Caerleon Road in Newport in his Audi A3 vehicle at 2am on March 31 this year.

The 27-year-old, of Locke Street in Newport, who the court heard is from the Czech Republic, will be sentenced on Friday, October 29, following the completion of a pre-sentence report. Until then he has been remanded in custody and has been given an immediate disqualification from driving, the length of which will be decided following sentence.

Mr Brimble, who was riding a bicycle at the time of the collision, was taken to The Grange Hospital after the crash where he died.

A statement which was given by his Mr Brimble's mother after his death read: "What can I say but I am truly heartbroken that I have lost another son. Matthew had his moments but he was a loving, caring son and best friend and he would not hurt a soul – I can’t believe he has been taken so soon.

"Matthew is gone but not forgotten as he surely touched everybody’s heart who knew him. I’m going to miss my first born but he is with his brother, uncle Scotty, and his Nana and Granch.”
