Showing results for "can a windows image file vhd be used to restore a win7
system onto a new drive"

No, it is not possible to restore a VHD Backup file on another PC. You can
only restore your system to its earlier state.
but further down it says

Can I reinstall Windows 7 with a system image?
Yes. System Image Recovery is one of the advanced boot options in Windows 7.
It allows you to replace everything on the PC with an image file containing
all the system drives and other drives you need.7 Mar 2023

I told win7 to make an image when doing the backup and yes its well over
900gb (1tb drive) so it has indeed made a backup of the whole drive

So who is right?

you are confusing virtual machines and virtual hard discs with ISOs &
IMGs....

a VHD is a Virtual Hard disc file and you need a type 1 or a type 2
hypervisor to mount and run a VHD file (think VirtualBox, Parallels,
VMWare, ProxMox etc

Windows can be asked to create a system recovery image and this is
usually in IMG or ISO format and this can be either ona USB memory stick
or on a DVD or on a hidden partition on a hard disc. ISOs and IMGs are
bootable in their own right.

VHD files are not bootable without having a Virtualisation platform as
described earlier.

yes I know how to mount the vhd files and I can select parts to recover so
can you tell me how to get windows to create an iso backup that can be used
to do a fresh install in case of problems. I don't need to know a step by
step just "where" in windows can I do this?

when I use backup and restore I check a box which says "create a system
image"as though its saying "as well as the back up you are about to create
do you want an image as well"

when it completes I have a folder called "WndowsImageBackup"
inside that there is another folder called "Bckup 2023-04-30 180007"
inside that there are umpteen xml documents and the vhd file but no iso
file?

Thanks!

Aha... Windows should also be asking you to insert a DVD or USB stick to
create a Windows Restore tool.

So if the worst happens, you use that DVD disc or USB stick to boot from
and then it will then access the dated backup folder you refer to.

This is of course assuming your Hard disc hold that backup folder is not
damaged so backing up that backup is imperative along with backing up
your system restore DVD/USB disc to another DVD or USB stick
