55-year-old told police: "Yes, I've had a drink"

An Onchan man has been banned from the road for three years after being caught driving whilst more than double the legal limit.

Neeraj Ramsaran Bhatia, of Majestic Drive, was stopped by police on Central Promenade, just after 3am, on 11 November.

Officers noted his Range Rover was driving very closely to the taxi in front; despite signalling him to stop the 55-year-old only pulled over when they sounded their sirens.

He failed a roadside breath test and was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters.

At Douglas Courthouse Bhatia admitted drink driving; his advocate told the court his client had only intended to drive a ‘relatively short distance’ home but acknowledged: “He should not have got behind the wheel at all.”

Fining Bhatia £1,700, and ordering him to pay prosecution costs of £125, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told him: “It’s quite clear you were significantly over the limit.”

Bhatia will remain disqualified until he’s taken and passed an extended driving test and drink drive rehabilitation course.
