Well then. As I posted up there somewhere, I won't be able to ride the
Z nor CB in a big area of Paris from the end of 2022.

SWMBO has said that I can buy a new bike, but obv, the CB and Z have to
go. <fx: sob>

What recommendations does the font for a big sized machine? I'd like to
stick with something along the style of the CB, if I can. I was
thinking of a BMW (maybe the 1200RT?). It'll have to be a Euro4 bike,
at the very least.

Exactly what I was thinking. Or, surrender to the inevitable and buy

Then again, he lived there through the 100bhp limit days, so if he can

Heh, not an option. Most of my customers/partners/distis are in Paris
and I'll be damned if I have to take public transport.

Cheeky fscker. It never gets old, does it? :-)

Well, there's always that option. I could keep the CB as the long
tourer and an eleccy bike for Paris trips. I could <fx: shudder> go for
an electric scooter.

Yes, I've also decided I want a bike with lights. And those big,
rubbery things at the front and back that make the bike go forward.

how is John finding the XR in Paris? Bars are quite wide for filtering.

The RT is a bulky behemoth that seems to bloat with every revision. The
R1200/1250RS is the best Boxer in my very partisan view.

I have both of the above and would always choose the RS for urban riding
due to its relatively narrow profile, low centre of gravity and lower mass
compared to most other boxers. The London SEG use them as they obviously
agree with me.

Anyone up for a bit of discussion about filtering?

What is currently taught for the theory test? Having passed my bike test
53 years ago I've missed out what's considered good, or acceptable,
practice now.

Back then it was never an issue but with much more traffic now I tend to
work my way to the front at temporary traffic lights and will filter
down the middle of two lanes with traffic lights on two lanes.

It's stop start traffic on motorways that I wonder about as, though I
generally avoid motorways and am seldom in a hurry, I cannot bring
myself to wait with the cars so I tend to filter between the two outer
lanes in 3rd gear at around 20-30mph. Once the lanes are all moving at
around 40mph I stick in lane.

Irrelevant. If you need guidance go for something like Motorcycle
Roadcraft.

It's useful to distinguish between filtering and queue-jumping, the
latter being where you delay cars by your action.

Fine. Personally I do it at lower speeds and in a lower gear, but then
I usually have a pillion.

I don't think filtering is part of the theory or on road test

pretty much what I do on the rare occasion I am in a queue on a
motorway. Typical places would be the M25 on the way to the tunnel or on
the M6 between the M5 junction and the Blackpool turn off.

Although, on the M25 there are often more than 3 lanes so just not
between 1 & 2 as these are the ones where people chop & change more.

Of course, this relative sanity goes out of the window when in France
where you just put your flashers on and filter at >100kph otherwise you
hold up the locals.

Are cage drivers still shits when they see bikes filtering in the UK? I
still remember them actively trying to block bikes from getting past.

Not often on the regular commuter runs IME, but there were definitely a
few that would try to block you. The ones that scared me the most were
the ones that would swerve to give you more space, without thinking that
there might be someone filtering on the other side as well...

TBF, they shouldn't be filtering on the other side.
