A drug driver has been jailed for nine years after he collided with a car on the A350, killing one man.

On December 14, 2023, Ben Clough, of Sambourne Gardens in Warminster, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court and was jailed for nine years, after pleading guilty to careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.

Clough, 31, had been driving along the A350 Yarnbrook on April 4, 2022 at around 9.20pm when he crossed the central white lines.

The motorist, who was driving a Range Rover and had cocaine in his system, collided head-on with a Nissan X-Trail, causing a fatal collision.

69-year-old Robert Godfrey from Westbury died at the scene.

“Clough put many people’s lives at risk by choosing to get behind the wheel while under the influence of cocaine,” said PC Charlotte Sartin, a community road safety officer.

“Unfortunately, his actions led to the death of Robert.

“Not only that, in February this year while on release under investigation, before a charge was authorised by the CPS, Clough was stopped by officers again under the influence of cocaine.

“Clough’s incredibly reckless and dangerous actions had already led to the death of Robert and it’s shocking to think he willingly chose to drive while under the influence of drugs again.

“Nothing can bring Robert back but hopefully this lengthy sentence will bring his family some closure and lead Clough to reflect on his actions.”

Robert Godfrey has been described by his family as a “hardworking, reliable, caring and loyal man, who had a dry sense of humour.”

“Rob was an agricultural contractor who loved his job and enjoyed passing on his years of experience by mentoring many of his work colleagues.

“Outside of work, he enjoyed photography and watching Formula One and rugby, and a pint.”

“He leaves behind and will be greatly missed by his wife, two children and six grandchildren.”

Wiltshire Police have now emphasised that they will be continuing to run their drink/drug drive campaign throughout December, and officers will be carrying out early morning and late night vehicle checks throughout the county..
