A man from Barking who refused to provide the details of the person driving his car caught littering by Barking and Dagenham Council Enforcement Officers has been found guilty in court.

During a routine patrol on 17 January 2023, council enforcement officers witnessed the driver of a Grey Jeep Commander dispose of a cigarette from the car window on Faircross Parade, Barking and drive off.

Further investigation showed that the registered keeper of the car was a Mr Shaheryaar Baig of Clare Gardens, Barking.

On 19 January, Mr Baig was issued with a Driver Identification Notice to provide the details of the driver at the time of the offence.

The officer in charge of the case spoke with Mr Baig several times to assist with identifying the driver of the vehicle. The officer even supplied him with a photograph of the driver of the vehicle at the time of the offence.

Despite repeated attempts to help Mr Baig with his Notice, he failed to provide the details and the case went to court.

The case was heard at Barkingside Magistrates Court on Tuesday 2 January where Mr Baig pleaded not guilty.

However, the judge ordered him to pay a £300 fine, costs to Barking and Dagenham Council of £1,268 and a Victim Surcharge of £120, totalling £1,688.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said “We take littering and dumping rubbish in Barking and Dagenham very seriously.

“This individual had every opportunity to work with our enforcement team, but he refused to do so. He now must pay for the consequences of his failure to comply with the Notice, an expensive lesson, which I hope he has learnt from.”
