I have discovered some TV channels on Freesat that show old films, some
are quite good, many are black and white and everybody in them smokes like
a chimney.

I set some up to record and now and then the recording shows a length of
several hours. What seems to happen is the channels are very good at
sending a start signal but once they go off shift no ends signal is sent.

Does that sound feasible? It's a Freesat Recordable 4K TV Box if it makes
a difference.

I have a Manhattan Freesat PVR so it might be a bit different from your
equipment. However, the default is to select a programme from the EPG
and then press the Record button the remote and after asking if I want a
single programme or the whole series it adds it to the recording schedule.

When the EPG is on the screen it shows the functions available from the
coloured buttons on the remote, and one of those is "Manual Set".
Choosing that gives me a screen where I choose the channel to record,
the time I want the recording to start, and how long to record for. That
arrangement doesn't look for an end signal it just records for the
duration set.

If your box has any similar manual set-up it would save a lot of
recording time at the end of what you want to watch.

PVRs vary by my Panasonic lets me edit the recording settings so I
select a programme to be recorded then change the start and finish times
as well as the channel. I have done this when there has been an event I
want to record either to watch later or to send to a friend in the
colonies. I can then use its "Selective Delete" to just keep the bits I
want. Sometimes you get a feeling the times of programmes are going to
be drastically changed or moved to another channel.

I've recently noticed that on the samsung tv channels that are online that
you will go back to a channel only to find a caption saying this channel has
been promoted to channel xxx, retune to continue watching. Promoted seems an
odd word to use, moved to annoy the viewer might be more appropriate!

My PVR records on a set time, plus pre and post padding, based on the
time found in the EPG when the timer was set*. When playing back a
recording the broadcast start and stop markers are displayed on the
playback status bar. The only channel that I've noticed with
occasionally missing markers is Channel 4 HD from satellite. Lesser
channels such as Talking Pictures seem to be OK with broadcast start and
stop markers.

* there are other modes but the box doesn't use CRID information nor use
broadcast start and stop markers.

I've found that PVRs, both dedicated ones and software such as Next PVR or
TVHeadend that runs on a computer, were very unreliable if "accurate
recording" (using CRIDs) was enabled. Often the recorder would fail to start
or (more rarely) fail to stop. So I gave up using it and I now add padding
of 5 minutes before the scheduled start time and 10 minutes after the
scheduled end time (a configure-once parameter). The only time that has
failed for me was a programme that was scheduled for about 1 AM (a signed
repeat, the only time that the programme was repeated) and all programmes
were delayed about 30 minutes due to a late-running sports programme earlier
on.

The fact that recordings have extraneous material before and after is not
important because now that I record everything in TVHeadend on a Raspberry
Pi, I just edit off the previous/next programme, continuity announcements
and adverts of anything I want to keep.

Please can you tell me what tuner you use with the Pi?

I happen to have some underused Raspberry Pi units and this could be a
good use.

Thanks
