After my debacle with HSBC who refused to make an Internet bank transfer
of £355 because the name/account number didn't match despite my
instructions to proceed but also locked me out of Internet banking I wrote
to them, good old snail mail. After two weeks I have received the most
appalling standard computer letter that says they are treating it as a
complaint and will investigate but it may take 35 days.

A move is on the cards, I have the following options:

Fordingbridge

Nationwide

Ringwood

Barclays
LLoyds
Nat West
Santander

Any thoughts on any of them good/bad/other? I know they're not homogeneous
but I don't want to jump from frying pan to fire.

I do everything online but would like the ability to go in to the branch
if there's a problem.

Thanks.

I would be inclined to go for Nationwide. They have promised never to
close the last branch in a town or village, and they pay interest on the
first £2,500 in the current account.

Behind the scenes (you don't find out about them unless you have a
current account) they have savings accounts that pay a better rate of
interest than the ones they publicly advertise.

I would beware of Santander. My sister as executor of someone who died
with a Santander ISA still hasn't got Santander head office to accept
her entitlement to withdraw the money and close the account, because
they won't accept that the letter of Probate she sent them really was
submitted by the person named on the Probate. It has now been over 5
years ... The proof they asked for would cost more to produce than the
balance in the account.
