Wouldn't it need Labour to get back in power to close down the railways
as they closed the coal mines?

Maybe they resent the success of Crossrail? That project seemed to
suck in funding ok (I know it was three years late and with huge
overrun on costs).

Actually, the Crossrail cost overruns in percentage terms were much less
than with most large infrastructure projects. HS2 is already much worse,
and construction has barely started.
