I think it's the difference between 'reason' and 'justification'.

Back in the day I recall getting a replacement Hella grill with huge
spotlights for my Mk1 Astra. Was the first newish (<12month old) car
I'd had and I was soo proud of it.

Did I really need the extra light? Good as they were, I can't really
say I did, but they made me happy, so...

I had a pair of blue dot spot and fog lights that I wanted to fit to my
car (not nearly new, nearly 20 years old at the time).

Firstly a Triumph Herald but the bumpers weren't metal so wouldn't work
then a Morris 1000 which didn't have enough metal in its bumpers...

I still have them knocking about somewhere (I saw them when I packed up
the lockup).

They're like this (although that particular one is a fog not a spot)
