It's a pulley for a lawmnower drive belt. Its two bearings are held in
the pulley by (I assume) some kind of spinning process. The metal of the
pulley is folded over the outer edges of the bearings.

Anyone got any good tips for unspinning it to replace the bearings, then
folding it back over again. Whenever I've tried to take similar things
apart in the past it's always ended up bodged mess.

I think the right answer may be to turn off the folded over lip in a
lathe, but I'm not sure what the best way to hold the replacement
bearings back in afterwards would be. Loctite maybe?

Cost wise I guess the bearings would be about a tenner, whereas to buy a
new pulley is 50 quid or more.

If the part holding the bearing is aluminium, then I would say heat.
Maybe even boiling water might be enough, specially if the bearing is
still held in place after you have removed the lip.

Hang on, having consulted a competent authority on these matters
(youtube) is the pulley in two halves riveted together? Then just
separate, replace bearings and rejoin.

Thanks. The pulley does look very similar, but, there aren't any rivets.
Looks like the two halves might be friction welded. (Or could be spot
welded, I'll need to clean it up a bit). If they're spot welded, I might
be able to drill them apart...

I would try to just chisel it open with screwdriver and hammer, but
I'm a bodger.

Or: maybe it's the right shape to be replaced by a standard pilot bore
pulley. if, of course, your lathe has a big enough swing to bore it
out and you're feeling brave...

Good tip to regrease the bearing too, I reckon about 1% of the grease
in a bearing is for lubrication, the rest is just to keep dust and crap
out. A Swedish engineer once told me that if you could keep all foreign
matter(including microscopic particles) out of a bearing it should last
pretty much indefinitely.
This bloke has a few different types, one of which looks like it's
spot-welded.
