(1) My Novatech (more than 15 years old) desktop's Power push button
has decide to fight when I use it. To boot up you have to keep pressing
it hard multiple times before the machine powers up. From the noise the
switch makes when it's pressed it sounds as though some of the plastic
of the button assembly has broken and is loose in the assembly. So I
arranged for my local expert (?) to take a look.

(2) As it was raining this morning I put Nova in an old strong canvas
bag (just the right size) to keep Nova dry. As I was negotiating the
bend in the Nova decided to escape and twisted from my hold, from about
knee height and made a horrible bang on the floor. So I thought I
better make sure it's still working.

(3) Back on the bench with the side panel removed I plugged all the
leads back into the correct sockets and fiddled for around 10 minutes
with the Power switch. Eventually it started and the monitor sprung into
life. Part way through the boot up I got a message to insert XP CD in
the drive. This I did, but after a few minutes through the procedure,
just as it 'said' loading Windows I got an error message that it
couldn't load Press F3.

(4) After pressing F3 the whole silly sequence repeated. So I read the
error message more carefully and noticed it 'said' that I seemed not to
have a hard drive in my hardware.

(5) I visually examined everything I could and found that multiplex plug
at the end of the flat cable from the Drive was next to it's socket but
not actually plugged into the socket. So I carefully pushed it back into
the socket.

(6) I switched everything back on and Nova booted up beautifully until
the message 'Found new hardware'. It took some time to find out what
this hardware was. It was the TP-Link Wireless G USB Adapter. So
another 15 minutes spent searching for it's installation disc. It was
then that I remembered that the XP set up disc was still in the Disc
drive. Unfortunately I couldn't get the drawer to open so that I could
replace the disc.

(7) Fortunately I have a cheap stand alone disc drive, and wondered 'if
I use that, would it override Nova's drive. It did so we're up and
running but with an XP installation drive still stuck in the CD drive.

(8) Whilst the side is off I took the chance to clean the filter that is
mounted on that side panel. The AMD (Sempron 2800) chip is now running
at 48C, with the side panel back in situ 53C and before cleaning the
filter 61C.

All that's left to do now is reset back to 09:30 and deliver Nova back
to the 'pooter vet for power switch replacement. And hopefully set up
disc extraction.

FN, there should be a small hole in the Disk Drawer, that will accommodate a
straightened out paper clip, that may open the drawer for you?

I was going to suggest that. Don't have the machine running when you do it.

Can't try that right now as Nova is currently at the 'pooter vet
undergoing minor surgery which covers extracting the disk too. ;)

You could do a Yorkshireman's repair and replace it with a bell push :-)

That's probably what the 'pooter vet will have to do, or something very
much like it. :)

Nova's back, all mended. No new switch, no new switch mounting housing.
The 'pooter vet managed to repair the broken housing, with something
like Araldite but with a much faster curing time. Doesn't seem to be a
bodge and works as just well as it did before. I reckon it lasted more
than 16,400 switchings before it actually became defunct.

It makes a nice change to hear of something mended rather than replaced.
I wonder if he used something I used a while ago, called JB Weld. Two
tubes like Araldite and setting really hard but much quicker than
Araldite - just a few minutes from mixing the two components together
and it starting to cure.

That reminds me of the time my dad was carrying out some repairs to the
roof of our three storey Victorian house. We had a triple fifteen wooden
ladder which weighed a ton and we managed to drop across the neighbours'
gardens before getting it in place.

He mixed the Jet Cem and climbed the ladder only to discover that Jet Cem
sets quicker than he could climb. I learned some new words that day!

or maybe it was something called "Araldite Rapid" - the days of leaving
stuff like that to cure overnight in the airing cupboard are long gone.

Rapid, is not as strong a bond as the slow setting Araldite, which is
why they still sell both versions. You can speed up both version by
adding some gentle heat, but then they become more runny when warmed.

I only mentioned Araldite because we used a fair bit when I was working
for GPO Research at a Dollis Hill outpost back in the early 1960s. The
guy in charge of the workshop had one those old (really old in 1963)
kettle with the wrap over hollow metal handle that had broken off. You
the type, where the owner had wrapped string round it to avoid burning
his hand. The kettle was sitting permanently on the hot stove, always
at the ready for the next brew. He had repaired with Araldite and
sweared by it and used it on lots of things around the labs and
workshop.

I had a colleague (at TVC) who brought in gearbox from his A3). He rebuilt
one or two of the cogs with Araldite

That's the year that I left them to join the R & D Dept of Osram (GEC)
Ltd on East Lane, Wembley, just opposite North Wembley tube station,
and next to the BOC site quite close to the GEC Hirst research Centre .
That was the autumn of 1968. That autumn was pretty eventful, got
married, change jobs, car was written off on Friday 13th September on
M1, then I contracted 'glandular' fever in the November and was off
work, in new job for getting on for 13 weeks. The doc diagnosed it as
GF but blood tests later showed that it was Brucellosis. It was
postulated that I had contracted the disease from eating a clotted cream
tea in some tea rooms in Corfe Castle whilst on honeymoon. What a year
that was. Just looked at it on street view. Almost didn't recognise.

I did some work as a contractor at the East Lane site from 78 until late
81 - and the Hirst Research Centre was still there at the time.

By then the main building had been taken over by GEC Medical (where I
worked for about a year) and a lot of the rest had been turned in to an
industrial estate. I later spent about 18 months in "Building 110" at
the back of the site, working for Marconi Space and Defence systems.

I recently noticed that The Hop Bine has been turned in to a Tesco
Express, but the other local haunt "The Preston" is still there.

Our paths could have crossed since I left Osram at the end of October
1979 for a return to Sheffield and a job in R & D in the steel trade.
I'll leave you to check on when Margaret Thatcher's steel strike
started. :( I spent some time looking for work, but with my honours
degree in Physics and 16 years experience in industry I was able to
'walk' into teaching and spent the next 14 years teaching science,
mainly physics and electronics to 11 - 18 year old kids. I never liked
the job, but it was a job and payed the old wolf before he got to my
door. Early retirement, to care for Mum and Dad, was my get out of
jail card issued in 1994. So it would appear that I was only in payed
employment from 1963 to 1994 far less than most folk.

Not far lees. I joined the BBC in 1962 and "took early retirement" in 1996.
