They are advertising them at 2 for £7. Closer to christmas they will be

That is maybe true, but a few weeks ago Bethlehem Candles were on QVC.

Apparently there is a new version of Scalextric coming out this year for all
the latest super hero type vehicles and stunt cars etc. Leaves me a little
cold to be honest. Once you have sold everyone something you make a new one
so they have to buy it again.
And Drones for Christmas, oh no....

I'd guess that they, and the makers of durable fashion goods, like, it
would seem, modern Scalextric, are assuming that a lot of people intend
to have a last fling before they go into financial lockdown, especially
given that the government appears to have legislated Covid out of
existence (at least for those of working age). Possibly hoping that
someone will bail them out of their fuel debts in a way that wouldn't
happen for Christmas debts.

They are maybe also assuming that many have not planned ahead for the
energy price rises and they need to extract money from them before they
realise they can't afford it.

However, as this is USENET, I should also point out that September
started here about 29 years ago, and hasn't finished since.

May also be an expectation of inflation to come. Buy now before it gets
more expensive!

....or of fearing finding later that what you wanted is no longer available
because the makers have gone bust or shut down due to energy costs.
