From <https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-62575889>

Train tracks have been blocked and several buildings evacuated after a fire broke out near London Bridge.

More than 70 firefighters are tackling the blaze in a railway arch on Union Street, Southwark, which was reported just
after 09:20 BST.

Network Rail said it had also spread to a car park and a "couple of electric cars are ablaze".

Four rail lines have been closed, while the Jubilee line on the Tube is also part suspended.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said the entire railway arch beneath the tracks had caught fire and smoke "can be seen from
miles around".

Footage shared on social media showed huge amounts of dark smoke billowing into the sky

Student Lauren Chopin, who lives in an apartment two minutes' walk from the fire, said she had to wear a mask in her
apartment due to the fumes.

"There is a lot of smoke all through Union Street and neighbouring streets," said the 20-year-old.

"It sometimes slows down and the smoke becomes whiter, only to be followed by another huge burst of black smoke."

LFB station commander Wayne Johnson said: "The blaze is producing heavy smoke and those living or working in the local
area are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

"Trains to and from London Bridge are affected and several buildings have been evacuated."

The brigade previously said crews were also investigating another blaze at London Bridge Tube station after smoke was
seen but it was later "determined this was from the fire on Union Street".

A Network Rail South East spokesperson urged travellers to check their journeys as the blaze was causing major
disruption to trains between Waterloo East and London Bridge.

They said: "We've got all four lines blocked through Ewer Street junction at the moment owing to the fire."

Allegedly caused by an "illegal pedicab" -
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/london-bridge-southwark-fire-black-smoke-waterloo-union-street-arches-pedicab-b1019096.html
The location is between Waterloo East/Blackfriars and London Bridge
rather than London Bridge station itself.

Possibly more than one (a charging site for the pedicabs).

People calling for more regulation are conflating loud music and other
antisocial usage, with the possibility they have dodgy batteries.

London Bridge Station was still open for Southern trains, so perhaps
Thameslink shares some infrastructure with the compromised line from
Waterloo East (equipment under those arches perhaps).

I thought the problem was the smoke and flames, which would envelope all
four tracks on the viaduct. In any case, if there's a high risk of possible
explosions close to a line, it's always closed till the fire is out.

It's not the viaduct between Blackfriars to London Bridge. Didn't you
look at the reports?

Yes, I assumed it must be very close to London Bridge if smoke was seen at the Tube station.

No, it was east of the junction with the line from Blackfriars. The
photographs shown on the BBC News story were of Union Street, America Street
and Great Guildford Street. Several were of the garage on GGS, with soot
staining the white paint above the sign "Fitting Bay"
https://goo.gl/maps/1kua1MemUSfx4Ugt5. One showed America Street -
identified by the TP Bennett banner: https://goo.gl/maps/akR9DjkonTSL8tCJ8

I presume in theory Thameslink trains to Mitcham Junction on the Sutton loop
could still run, but (obviously) the ones via London Bridge to Brighton
could not. Was Bedford-Brighton trains being run between London Bridge and
Brighton, and likewise were they running between Bedford and (for example)
Blackfriars? I imagine that signallers have contingency plans for trains to
be turned at intermediate locations, given line blockages at several key
locations, so they'd just put into action the "between Blackfriars and
London Bridge" closure plan.

Union St is west of there. The Twitter video clip on bbc.co.uk clearly
shows it west of the blue lattice bridge on Redcross Way, beyond the
distinctive three-red-one-grey building.

https://goo.gl/maps/NugAguWQwn4EhN1X9

One of the photos of firefighters has this banner in it:

https://goo.gl/maps/ToFTr8sr3mzVYcKY7

Which is half a kilometre west of Borough Market.

Interesting to note that pedicabs that got their name from being pedalled
still retain the name for the electric versions while scooters and bikes
have the prefix electric to differentiate from their muscle powered
versions.

I'd assume all the London pedicabs are power-assisted, so there aren't any
local pure human-powered examples to compare them with. Incidentally, these
modern ones are genuinely pedalled, but the motor provides a boost, like
many e-bikes. They're also absurdly expensive to ride in.

There are some where the absence of electrics (and the greater
pedalling effort) is plain to see.

The more general worry is maybe the large amounts of water being
squirted around which can be of more localised intensity than the
worst of downpours and not all in the downward direction which a lot
of equipment is only designed to cope with. A fire under a viaduct
arch can also compromise the integrity of the brickwork and/or spread
to inflammable components on the line above.
