Some years ago I remember seeing on the BBC web site, a brief text summary
of each item covered by the "Today" programme on Radio 4.

Is this still available?

As the BBC are totally skint, I doubt such a service still exists.

It needn't cost much if they use voice recognition to transcribe it.

Still requires compliance, i.e someone to read it, and filter out all of
the comedy errors. That's the cost.

Yes, they used to do so /and/ (going back even further) provide a link
to a clip of the relevant bit of the programme.

I don't recall seeing it for some time now.

Out of interest, how does radio get away without providing a text service
for the deaf? There’s an awful lot of factual programming on Radio4 that
just isn’t elsewhere.

I never saw a transcript as such, just a summary of each segment.
Example here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9745000/9745360.stm

I hazard the guess that with limited resources the BBC have concentrated
on providing subtitles and signing for TV services; and that that is the
priority for the bulk of the deaf and hard of hearing.

No good as it fails when folk talk over each other. Some companies offer
this service, but require their product to be featured in exchange.

They used to do this with In Touch as well as some other programmes on

Yes, that's a good example of what I mean.

Over the years, they have cut right back on the amount of information on
the BBC website. You used to be able to go to most programmes' website
and get more details but rare to find much now. Quite often just a link
to the recording on iPlayer.

I think it started with commercial interests moaning about "unfair
competition" from the BBC though I doubt that many would take out a
subscription to a website behind a paywall, especially when they would
be very unlikely to have what you wanted to know about a BBC programme.

It always seems case of "if in doubt blame the BBC", local newspapers
are struggling and blames the BBC but it is not because people get their
local news via the BBC (there is very little there anyway) but because
the local papers were very dependent on advertising of houses, cars,
jobs etc which is now mostly online (obviously not on the BBC).

I don't think the cost of writing a summary of the programme content is
a major factor, they will be doing that for the archives anyway.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/oct/08/inside-bbc-archive-100-years

"‘The cultural memory of the UK’: unearthing the hidden treasures of the
BBC archive

"For years the corporation has been digitising its vast reserve of
content, turning up lost footage of everyone from General Eisenhower to
Victoria Wood. Meet the team bringing a century of footage back to life"

"The machine scans the film as it is played, so that it can be converted
into a digital video file. Metadata will be added, including the
programme’s original Radio Times listing. A powerful speech-to-text
system introduced by the BBC in 2015 will then create a searchable
transcript of the episode, adding that to the file, too."

So all the information is being collected, though whether hoi poloi will
have access to it is another question.
