I saw that some JVC 4k TVs (around 40") were selling for around the £200
mark without a very large reduction from full price.

JVC used to be a good brand, so I am wondering if the name has been bought
and budget panels are being shipped under this brand.

Or are 4k TVs just getting much cheaper?

I am looking for a 4k monitor around 40" as one of my dual monitors
(ancient) has just died and my Full HD monitor won't really show two
windows side by side with enough detail.

Cheers

Dave R

Richer Sounds will do you a 50" Sharp 4k TV for £249 and it has a DVB-S tuner.

In much the same way as CRTs used to be made by just a handful of people no
matter what tv you bought, I think its going the same way with flat screens.
The different technologies have their own expert makers. As for JVC, I tend
to think as with many companies, the mass market products tend to be brand
engineered around the same circuit and software to some extent. You might
find some differences in software, but the hardware is much the same, and
where stuff is made and what cost cutting is going on is anyone's guess.

Yes brand engineering, but its not who can sell them, its actually how well
they are made I feel.

And Kenwood over here used to be Trio back in the day, due to Kenwood making
food mixers, a completely different company, and who would buy hifi from a
company with the same name as a food mixer!

Sharp, do they still have that extra boost colour which is a kind of gold
colour or have they just gone back to the old method?

Is that for the complete TV, or for the special ion-free, ultra-pure-copper
mains cable? ;-)

Years ago I read an article that said one factory in Taiwan made just
about all desktop computers including all the big names. The only
difference was that the big established names had their own Quality
Control people in the factory.

The cable is extra, that is just the special ion-free, ultra-pure-copper
mains plug.

That would be Foxconn. They are still very much in the same business -
the make most of the phone and tablet kit for Apple (don't know about
the Mac), motherboards under their own name, and so it goes on.

Thanks all.
So it appears to be a generic no-name (however good/bad that is).

Will swerve for the moment.

No that's another £249, more in silver...

Seriously though Lidl have the Toshiba at £199 from Monday and it looks a decent specification: -
https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/black-friday/toshiba-43-4k-smart-tv/p56660?ar=16

Includes speakers, [wired] Ethernet, HDR, 3 HDMI, 2 USB (use USB 3 drives for reliable recording) and a [4k] satellite receiver. No Bluetooth and Wi-Fi not mentioned.

Given the limitation of an HDMI connection, it should do fine as a monitor so long as you are not gaming.

Often these thing depend on the customer service you get if there is an
issue. I've not bought anything recently, so cannot comment.

Interesting, thanks.

One issue is the space available.
I have a nice little nice beside the door from the hall into the main
living area/kitchen and up to 40" should fit without seriously endangering
passers by.

43" might be pushing it a bit unless I angle it which might be doable.

Then again, I wonder how many TV sets there will be in the local stores,
and if so for how long.

Cheers

When I got myself a new TV, ready for DSO, I was wondering where it
could go and decided that the corner was the best place.

I asked the local dealer for the dimensions and he got out an old
cardboard box and cut a piece of cardboard to size for me to test the
location in my house.

A few years back my mother had a 21 inch CRT TV which weighed a ton and
the bezel around the screen was extremely wide. One day it failed so
time for a new TV. I took her around the local store to see some flat
panel TVs - "I don't want one as big as that looking at 40(ish) inch
panels."
It took some persuading AND a cut out piece of cardboard to demonstrate
that the a 43 inch panel was actually a smaller than the front of her
old 21 inch CRT set. Also the panel being around 50x to 100x thinner
than the CRT set gained her much more usable space in her living room.

On installation of a 42/43 inch panel the first comment was "I can see
that a lot better than my old TV" At the time her sight was just
beginning to fail, unfortunately a dozen years on and now registered as
partially sited and relying on modern technology to help out.

We modeled our lounge and bedroom TVs using cardboard cut outs to see how they would look and fit.
