My grandson has an HP computer and would like the audio from it to feed into the powered speakers that I gave him. There's no 3.5mm stereo jack or RCA phono sockets on the computer, just a row of USBs. Does anyone know if it's possible to get audio from a USB at a level and impedance that will feed standard domestic equipment?

Put external sound card into Amazon. Lots of suitable bits and bobs there.

Yes dirt cheap, search for "USB sound card" on amazon or ebay.

I'd tend to get the type with a short cable between the USB end and the
mic/speaker socket end, the type without are more likely to get knocked and
result in a broken USB socket.

Bill
There are certainly adaptors that provide line level audio from a USB
input. They've been around for many years.

Correction: enter 'external USB sound card'. Scan.co.uk is a good place
to look.

It is unusual for there to be no analogue inputs and outputs on a -
presumably - desktop PC. Have you looked behind any flip open covers on
the front of the unit? Alternatively if there is more than one CD drive
slot (or even a floppy slot) have a look inside as there may well be
unconnected cables. If it is a slim super-thin laptop you may find an
optical output: optical to audio adapters are widely available and cheap.

Try a bit of Googling for a handbook for the machine.

Though how this combo is physically presented I wouldn’t like to say.

Does the computer have BlueTooth? Could you relay the audio using that,
many external speakers have a BlueTooth input - I have one that
sometimes use though unfortunately the Roberts radio only has a
BlueTooth input, no BlueTooth output.

I'm sure I've seen things like this, but failing that, what about those
cheap berhinger Sound boxes. Replaces the sound system in the laptop. I have
probably spelled it wrongly, but I have two here and they seem pretty good,
but MAY need a powered hub if the inside computer noise is on the supply
line and gets into the analogue bit of the sound box.

Here's an option:

a USB audio dongle like this one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sabrent-External-Adapter-Windows-AU-MMSA/dp/B00IRVQ0F8

no drivers or software needed. Also gives you the ability to add a
microphone or line in.

Use the line out for your powered active speakers.

it's usually a single 3.5mm socket recessed in the bottom edge. Takes
either a headphone or a combined headphone/microphone. If user can't
lift it safely use a mirror (or a smart phone in selfie mode).

A quick glance at pictures of the thing shows a small round socket on
the edge near the bottom right corner.

It'll be a combination microphone/headphone socket for a headset, so
3.5mm but with four connections.

if it happens to be a 4 pole headset 3.5mm 4 pole socket:

you can get Y adapters to take a combo 4 pole socket 3.5 mm jack to 2
seperate 3.5mm 3 pole microphone and 3.5mm 3 pole headphone socket.

If you want a good quality USB device that plays our audio *and* records
it, then look at the "Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen". Uses jack plugs, etc, though.
But at the price very good quality. I use that if I need an ADC+DAC with a
laptop on battery. Good enough for measurement purposes.

Failing that there are loads of 'OK' cheap, small USB DACs about - usually
with a small jack socket aimed at use with headphones. But again, adaptors
are cheap.

Can't comment on how to install and setup under 'doze as I've not used that
for decades. But it should (sic) be easy as that's what most people will
have I guess.

Indeed. FWIW I've 'reviewed' some of them on my AudioMisc site. You can get
them for a wide range of price and quality/performance levels. TBH I've
used them for all the machines I run for many years.

I use an external Terratec USB sound card - quite an old model but I'm
away from home and so can't check it right now - to play music from my
laptop through the stereo, which works very well.

My experiences with Scan have been awful, though it was quite a while ago.

Yes, and then buy from somewhere else.

They've never had any repeat business from me.

+1

I once purchased quite a lot from them. 2 years later I started getting
threatening letters from a debt collecting company. Scan had sold all
their bad debt information to this collecting company.

All my purchased had been by CC with the amounts paid in full before
Scan had sent the items. Luckily had had kept all my CC information
showing the payments and the invoices from Scan showing paid in full.
