Global demand, and Russia's invasion have been blamed for the
increased price of gas and electricity, but why?

We obtain around 50% of our gas from the North Sea and 33% arrives
through pipelines from Norway, whilst most of the rest comes from
Qatar in LNG tankers. We buy less than 5% from Russia.

We are being told that the UK has been especially hit because we are
Europe's biggest user of natural gas. Yet we are exporting gas into
Europe, despite having the continent's lowest storage capacity.

Anyone else wondering, or is it just me?

you are not alone ...

Strange statistic about our gas consumption. I saw a graph in a paper
the other day (possibly the Telegraph) showing that Germany was the
largest consumer of Russian gas - I believe the UK was down in about
10th place

also ... the recent hike in oil / petrol prices has been blamed on the
Ukraine situation - but a couple of years ago, as Covid started to
reduce fuel consumption, there was a huge reduction in pump prices.

At one time unleaded was being sold at ASDA for 99p a litre - and yet
the pump prices recovered to a pre-Ukraine level of around £1.50 without
any increase in VAT, fuel duty or tax. The recent 5p reduction appears
to have had almost no effect whatever.

If western governments want to get a grip of global prices and inflation
they ought to seriously think about taking control of OPEC

Apparently sunflower oil will be the next big scarcity demanding a large
price hike. Many distributors are already trying to stock up on other
kinds of cooking oils.

It is all down to "market forces". There is a greater demand for oil
and gas world wide than there is supplies coming onto the market.
America got tired of OPEC limiting production to keep prices high, so as
a change of policy America generally keeps all its oil for itself, which
makes petrol cheap over there (and fuel efficiency of their engines is
only a very recent consideration).

OPEC has so far rebuffed all overtures for them to significantly
increase output, despite the attempted embargo on Russian supplies. The
North Sea oilfields are commercial businesses and the profits are
greater selling on the world markets than in supplying Britain who
provided their extraction licences. So Britain buys on the world market
at those prices.

The sensible future is to take the ban off fracking, and licensing
companies to frack for oil and gas on condition that everything they
produce is supplied to Britain. But I can't see any Government going
along with such a sensible idea.

Jim

There is a shortage in gas supply to Europe - one of the main reasons is
that China has been willing to pay higher prices after shortages last
year. Colder than average winter in Europe and China/Korea/Japan last
year was a factor. Russia has allegedly been restricting exports of gas
since the last quarter of last year - well before invasion of Ukraine.
UK has also been hit by ageing of nuclear stations and subsequent
maintenance. Also lower average wind speeds reducing output from wind
turbines. And a major fire caused a main cable importing electricity
from France to be shut down towards the end of last year.
On top if all that, the costs of numerous energy companies failing are
also been being added to our energy bills - well over £2billion.

I cook all my food in olive oil, so I guess I'll stock up on that with
my next few grocery deliveries. I even eat olive oil flavoured Flora
pro-active spread on bread and toast.

There is enough sneeze making rape grown in this country to make
rapeseed oil. Also I have seen fields of sunflowers growing around
here. Its time, I think, to go back to the 'dig for victory' days and
make sure we build the factories and train people to do the processing work

But, we won't get sunflowers for at least a couple of months, nor rape.
We'll need to go back to frying in beef dripping ;-)
