Went for a little ride around yesterday. Very pleasant weather, bike ran beautifully.

Except...

Pulling away from stationary, it kept jumping out of first gear. This is at maybe 5mph, so I'd fumble around and bang it into second and bog down and wait. Not ideal.

Anyone know what's going on? [0]

Hopefully something relatively trivial. I can take it to the brilliant guy who looks after my cars, who also knows bikes. But I wondered if I can show up with an idea, so I don't look like a total dolt.

[0]. Where the FUCK is Murray when you need him? Dammit.

Semi-educated guess here. Either something's wrong with the
shift mechanism that spins the shift drum, or a shift fork is bent.
Either way, probably not a quick fix.

That spring simply returns the gear lever to the central position after
a gear change rather than maintains it in gear.

My money is on, as you suggested, worn dogs - and a gearbox rebuild.

As others have suggested - it's likely a problem within the gearbox,
which is an engine-out-and-split-the-cases job. Sorry
