From local Facebook Group late yesterday afternoon:

"Chettisham rail crossing barriers not coming down. Trains passing
with the barriers up. Do not use. Network rail are aware.

Police there turning cars around."

"Now I've seen this I'll never feel safe again. I'll have to stop and
try and look both ways now. Was bad enough before!

I'm hoping they only let the trains cross after the police had arrived.

Stansted to Birmingham^H^H Nuneation train delayed there 15 minutes.
Trains later in the evening losing around 5 mins on the short stretch
between Ely West and Third Drove.

No freight trains (combination of Sunday and Felixtowe Docks strike,
perhaps).

It's a full-barrier with automatic obstacle detector (which itself was
demolished about a month ago by an out of control car while the barriers
were down, and reopened about three days later.).

When they say "Trains passing with the barriers up" that's presumably
walking pace, continuous blast of the horn, after making sure that the
crossing is clear; rather than running at linespeed as if nothing was
wrong?

I was thinking about asking that, but even so it appears to have
somewhat unsettled the normals.

What kind of instructions would a driver need to have to SPAD the
signals protecting the crossing in such circumstances, and why
wasn't the regular barrier closure regime working?

Under authority from the controlling signaller, with instructions basically
as I listed above.

It's not something I've ever had to do myself, yet, so I don't know whether
there would be additional NR staff on the ground. Depending whether or not
the wigwags have also failed might also make a difference to the
procedures.

Too late for me to find out now, I'm afraid.
