So I updated to 11.3.1 and guess what! My Time Machine drive has disappeared!
Disk Utility tells me that the drive is not initialised.

My dislike of Big Sur has changed to hatred.

That sounds like a possible problem with the disk, rather than with Big Sur.

I'd suggest turning off Time Machine for now and running Disk Utility against
the disk to see if that's the case.

Yes, that's it. I tried the SSD in a different enclosure and the result is the
same. Fortunately I have other backups but none as recent as Time Machine.

Not linked but Bif Sur doesn't use Kernels of something
as I found that my virtualbox for running windows 10 doesn't work anymore
and there as yet isn't any update which does.
There are work-arounds but I've not found one that works as yet.

Also the new M1 mac won't run bootcamp So our message to new students will be a new M1 mac
won't run the sortware we use for labs for free (unless you purchase Parallels for £70) .

Hope either VB or BC will be sorted before term starts in september, so we can update them.

Have you looked at VMware for Intel based Macs? Works fine on my Intel
MacBook Air. Free versions for students available.

Parallels doesn't emulate the x64 to run normal Win10, so there's the
risk MS will withdraw the Arm version of Win10 from general use too. But
Win10/Arm does run Intel 32/64bit software in its own emulation layer.

VMware have already stated that the forthcoming "M1" Fusion version is
*not* going to emulate x86, so you either need to strongly advise
against an M1 Mac, or seriously look into updating the software you use
for labs.

At some point your students will not be able to buy x86 Macs, so you've
got a (very) little time...

I’ve been using Parallels on my M1 MBP for a few months now with as ARM
Windows VM. This VM runs pretty quick and as, Jaime points out, offers
emulation for 32 and 64 bit Windows applications. I hope VMware soon have
their own M1 product to rival parallels and thus speed up further
development by rivalling parallels.

They wrote an odd blogpost about how there’s no licensed way of doing it as
yet. Seems a bit odd:
update.html>

Have to say that as a long-standing VMware user I read that and thought
“hmm - I should buy Parallels when I move to M1”.

“Windows is second priority behind Linux”, whereas Parallels seem to be
giving Windows top priority. This nicely differentiates their goals from
Parallels which I assume was established primarily to run Windows VMs.
However several ARM Linux distros can already be run in Parallels VMs.

Thanks but no, as when the students come to univ. with their shiny new M1 macs they'll want to know
why they can't use them for the courses with hardware that we run.
Some will be asking us what computer should they buy , which will pretty much rule out the new Macs
as recomendations at this time.

we can't update the software we run the latest versions and every year it's updated.

Here's our 2 biggest problems. (other than students of course)

Multisim is currently only available for installation on Windows operating systems. Multisim can not be installed on Mac OS X or Linux. ... It is possible to use Multisim on a Mac OS X or Linux by means a Virtual Machine, where you are in fact installing on Windows. In Mac OS X you can also use Bootcamp.

Bootcamp currenly doesn't run on M1s

Using the NI myDAQ on an Apple Computer with macOS.
The NI myDAQ can be used on macOS but it has the following requirements;

macOS version 10.14 or below.
DAQmx Base driver 15.0.0 or below.
(first time I've seeen instructions to run software below a version) ;-)

Well I have to respond to all types of life forms .

got this from a student on monday at 7:35am

subject:- emergency help !
"Is it possible to get a magnet from the lab, we face hard situation with key being locked inside the door and hope using magnet would help to a better extent I believe."

as for spelling well our highly paid admin managers can't see what's wrong with calling a lab full of iMacs
a MAC Laboratory.
-----------
Not sure if it was meant but grandkids enrol !

And in response you have nothing but a crack to start something. How is
failing synaptic connections tied to the intelligence of a turnip in any
way going to lead to meaningful usenet discussion? It was William Poaster
who got busted using lots of puppets like a moron, and these are 'people'
who come out of the blue directly into threads where he was getting his
ass handed to him... nonstop for over a decade.

Until or unless William Poaster offers up his 'gold standard' GNU/Linux
program for assessment, there is no threat, just unsupported claims.

Shadow's computer has more hard drives than William Poaster's. Shadow wins.
William Poaster loses. Simple as that. Don't look now, but I think William
Poaster has a serious obsession with Shadow.
