If you end a rental lease, as a tenant how long do you have to get the
bond back?

Is there a point at which the bond will go to the landlord if you don't
claim it?

** If the LL makes no claim, the Rental Bonds Board will just hold the money.
This fact may get picked up if you sign a new lease some time and you could access it.

True story:
----------------
After my being in a flat for 25 years, the LL decided to increase my bond by a huge amount.
He claimed $200 was not up with current expectations and wanted it increased to $800.
When I first paid the bond, it was held by the LL but later changed to the newly created Board.
The idea behind this was to stop arsehole LLs holding on to the bond for fake reasons.

The total of all bonds held is massive - over one billion dollars in NSW.
Interest on the money finances Fair Trading and the various tribunals that have existed.
However, tenants get SFA - my $200 had only increased by $60 or so in twenty years.

So I wrote back to the LL pointing this out and that :

" I did not wish to contribute any additional funds to such a poorly performing investment "

The CTTT member at a subsequent hearing was very amused when he read that.

FYI

NSW renting law specifically precludes demanding increases in bonds from tenants.
