There's presently a large amount of construction work taking place outside
Lausanne station, various routes are diverted without temporary wires
having been erected.

Yes, we got caught up in the roadworks on both sides of the station. I
just caught a glimpse of the bus heading NW (erm, that would be Avenue
Louis-Ruchonnet) with the poles down. The other one I saw, going noisily
downhill was just coming out from under the railway bridge on Avenue
William-Fraisse and on reflection I don’t remember noticing whether it had
its poles up or not. They were both leaving the station construction area
so maybe they had both taken the poles down and hadn’t yet put them up
again.

Thanks,

Sam

That tip works for a lot of railway Wikipedia, btw; German or local
language page and translate back to English!

Though sometimes you need to read with an open mind regarding technical
terms and certain other things, particularly translating from Japanese or
Chinese; the translation from Japanese to English 'scrapped', for example,
seems to more commonly refer to 'withdrawn from service' (eg "the
locomotive was scrapped in 1992 and transferred to the museum three years
later").

Britains last Trolleybus built for the short demonstration line at
Doncaster Racecourse in the 1980’s
was despite the slogan on it promising a Quiet Revolution in Transport a
fairly noisy beast.
Based on a Dennis Dominator Chassis and retaining a small Diesel Engine
for off wire use it was still noisy on electric. ISTR the noise was a
combination of compressor noise for the brakes and fans for various tasks .
A production run would have addressed the issues but the single
demonstrator was built out of what was available. Though it was changes to
the bus industry that saw the proposals
to have a Trolleybus network in Yorkshire not progressed I have wondered if
anyone concerned
heard the bus and thought “If this is quiet gawd knows what they think
noisy is .”

I noted in Lyon a few years ago that their bi-mode trolley buses were
much nosier than their diesel buses due to the large bank of fans
blowing into the roof top electronics boxes.

Some effort had been made to silence the diesel engines where as the
electronics pack manufacture for the electrics had just concerned them
selves with keeping the electronic converters cool and pretty clearly
didn't consider what it sounded like.

Interesting, thank you. That sound is indeednot unlike the sound of the
trolleybus descending that I heard in Lausanne.
