For no particular reason I was browsing through the book and came across
the following, which seemed somehow appropriate to this group:

Ely, n.
The first, tiniest inkling that something, somewhere, has gone terribly
wrong.

As it happens, I've got a first edition of that book. Is the "terribly
wrong" channeling the fact the accompanying map only has places called
Ely outside the UK?

Over the page is "Esher" in Manchester Piccadilly Station.

It was an island in the Fens once, until they were drained.

I remember a primary school teacher in the 1950s saying islands were
surreounded by water so I mentioned it - and she called me an idiot
because she'd never heard of it therefore I was wrong.

We didn't have a TV and I did most of my reading either at the library
or at home from an ancient Britannica.

And then there's Isla Incahuasi/Incahuasi Island in the middle of
Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni/Uyuni Salt Flat:

<https://www.tourcounsel.com/2021/12/isla-incahuasi.html>

Ask nicely and I might upload a photo I took from near the top.

And unsolicitedly (if that word exists) there is a railway connection;
the visit was part of a Railway Touring Company itinerary through Peru
and Bolivia, yikes, eight years ago.

I hope RTC returns there soon. It currently has no South American tours
listed, and I wonder if the Cuba tour will proceed, given the amount of
recent storm damage? I'd quite like to return to Cuba, but maybe March
2023 will be too soon?
