It's a heated coffee plunger. Nice. You could get similar things in just
about any car of the era, but they were usually more portable. Don't
know if I would want a dash mounted water heater.

Then again, don't know if I would want a DakDak :)

There was a whole host of this shit around in the 60's. Thermoses that
plugged into the cigarette lighter, travel cup sets, fold up camp chairs
& tables, etc.

Um, no. They were just doing what everyone else at the time was doing.

There's been all kinds of weird and wonderful car accessories over the
years. How about a dash mounted cigarette dispenser that automatically
lit the things as you wanted one?

I imagine Gomez Addams would have loved it :)

Lol :)

Yeah, no surprises there. The early swing arm models were famous for
being one of the most evil handling and dangerous cars ever made.

For extra safety they had a standard aqua planning meter:-)
Speedo was driven by the RH front hub, if you hit water and your speedo
suddenly stopped working you knew you were aqua planning and you knew
that you had no steering or brakes, terrifying when you knew what it
meant:-)
At least mine taught me how to overtake, with 40hp and a 70mph top speed
overtaking took a lot of planning so you either learned how to do it
safely or you died:-)

No Darren, just *different*. If you knew how to drive one, and
understood those differences, then you could successfully drive them
very hard. I use the Porsche as a fine example of how they can be driven
very hard. You have to know how to combat rear wheel tuck under and, for
most people, it is entirely counter-intuitive.

Um, Daryl, hate to break it to you but there were lots of cars around in
the 50s and 60s that had similar horsepower and top speeds. I know
because I have owned many such vehicles. With *any car*, planning an
overtaking manoeuvre is always a critical skill no matter what your top
speed or power.

What could possibly go wrong with having hot water in the vicinity of your

Grouse :)

My brother in law was a DakDak nut when my sister first hooked up with
him, and he was always carrying on about how great they were. One day we
where all heading off for some family day out, and I was driving a HR
Holden sedan. My brother in law had my sister and his two sisters in the
DakDak and I told him to go ahead as I had to stop and get petrol, and I
had no doubt that the Holden would have no trouble catching up :)

This was before the days of mobile phones. I remember driving along
whatever road it was we were on and seeing smoke in the distance, and
when I got close enough to see clearly it was the brother in law's
beetle with smoke pissing out from inside the car while he was
frantically unloading shit out from under the bonnet. Apparently his
sisters, who were solid girls, bouncing around on the back seat had
shorted the seat frame out on the battery and set fire to the hessian
under the seat, and by the time they realised and stopped the thing was
well alight and there was no saving it.

They got themselves and their belongings out of the car, but they
couldn't put out the fire. By the time I got there the car was already
well alight, and while we tried to drag the back seat out to stop the
rest of the car burning we couldn't do it and the car burnt to the
ground on the side of the road.

It was supposed to have a plastic cover over the battery to stop such
things from ever happening, but like many of them it didn't and that
killed it.

No, there was all kinds of strange shit out back then. Car magazines of

Of course it is. Just Darren seeking relevance to a topic he simply
isn't relevant to. He wasn't even a glint in his father's eye in 1959, FFS.

See? If they were *portable*, they *weren't a fixture* in the car - and
the fact the the one in the Beetle is a fixture is what the whole point
of the article is about. Puir wee Darren hasn't a clue here.

Nasty but at least they survived, partly bad design and partly the
owners fault for not fitting the battery cover.
I was in Beetle that rolled (we were all still a bit pissed from the
previous night:-)), 3 of us rolled it back on its wheels, the owner got
inside and kicked the roof back out, checked and topped up the engine
oil then started it and kept going.
After a bit a backyard panel beating he kept that car for another few
years, they had their faults but they were tough bastards that didn't
take much to keep going.

Setting fire to the rear seat was a pretty common problem with the early
models apparently.

Yeah, they were pretty reliable I'll give them that.

I went out with a chick for a while years ago who had a superbug, and
that was a half decent drive compared to the early models. *Way* less
likely to fall over and lie on it's back with it's feet in the air when
you went around a corner, and had *vastly* improved brakes, but it still
felt like a 40 year old car compared to something like a Datsun 1600 or
a Ford Escort.

he certainly hasn't. there weren't such things as options for Fords,
Holdens, Mitsubs, etc., back then just as there aren't now
