Russia aims to seize southern Ukraine and to open a route to the separatist region of Transnistria in Moldova, a senior Russian general says.

Maybe but most of the separatist and breakaway states do indeed seem to support Russia, want to be a part of Russia, and it not illogical that Putin would want to protect them from potential NATO aggression, will not tolerate Russia's sphere of influence diminished by NATO.

To label separatist referendums as shams is as ridiculous as calling the Catalan referendum a sham, insisting the people of Catalonia had actually wanted to remain as a subjugated part of Spain.
