Our ward got reorganised when I was in Paisley.
My catheter bag was hanging on a stand, and the stand was relocated
before I was.
It's merely mildly uncomfortable.
The nurse was more distressed than me.
It's not as if the collar is fitted just up your Jap's eye.

Mine is still in place - the consultant's view was that if it being
there doesn't cause any problems then why add more risk by removing it.

I had a general anaesthetic when they removed the knee-end screws, but
an epidural when they eventually removed the ankle ones (the screw heads
rubbed unpleasantly on my shoes). The tiny surgeon used a swing brace
screwdriver and she really had to put some effort in.

That was the advice I got for my femoral nail in 2008. With the
caveat that if I broke the bone again that would be *really bad* with
the metalwork in it. So, if I was doing stuff that might risk that,
best to get it removed.

In 2012, as I slide innocently down the track on my arse in a race,
having lost the front, I concluded I'd better have it removed - and
did a few months later

I did ask the question 'What if I do it again ?'.
The consultant said that with the metalwork in place, I wouldn't break
/that/ bone again, but of course the force would go somewhere else -
no idea whether that would be better or worse.

Mine probably would've been left, but I'd subsequently bashed both
knees[0] and it seemed like it was better off out than in.

[0] My first ever brand new tyres, the right profile for the bike rather
than the previous ones that were almost square, chilly day,
inexperience, overconfidence. I didn't even make the first turn to get
out of our cul-de-sac before the bike disappeared from underneath me,
pretty much dropping me straight down in a riding crouch onto the
tarmac. Plain leather jeans offered little in the way of padding.

I've got a little bit of metalwork (couple of screws) holding my tibia together
in my right knee. After it healed I asked the consultant 'since I ride a motorcycle
and might break the leg again... would it be sensible to remove the screws?'.

His response was 'if you hit the knee hard enough to bend the screws then
you're probably losing your leg below the knee'. Which was comforting.

Right up there with "Oh, we like motorcyclists - they give us someone

After having half my right ulna replaced by a metal bar thirty years
back that option wasn't really open to me. But there must be
something in this usenet thread - the arm's normally just a nuisance
but it's been hurting like hell for the past day, enough to make me
wonder if there's any newer techniques that might make things easier.

Ask the surgeon for "the full Wolverine" and see what he suggests? You
might not get it on the NHS though. :-)

I had a urethral stricture since birth that required catheterization
every couple of years. When I was ~20, my doc showed me how to do it
myself, which I did until this year. No problem, no big deal, hardly any
pain at all. 10 years ago, or so, I ruptured a disc in my back. They
inserted a catheter for that surgery and screwed it up somehow. The time
interval kept dropping, and a new surgery was invented, so I had it
done. 4 months of absolute torture, and the hassle hasn't stopped.
Biggest regret of my life. I've got a list of at least 12 ways they
inflicted pain on me.

Yeah. Had one for 6 weeks before the latest surgery. The doc put it
right at belt level, so no matter what I wore, it was a pain.
