Hi,

local govt and other elections often infested with *stooge* candidates.
A stooge has no wish nor often ability to serve on council or in parliament if elected. They nominate purely to distort the outcome of the election in another candidate's favor.

This may be achieved by simply taking votes away from another and / or directing preferences to the favored one. There is no law against such tactics.

In a recent City of Sydney election for Mayor, there were 93 candidates - about 4 of whom had a real chance. The rest were stooges linked to one of the 4 by preferencing.

The current elections for council position in NSW is riddled with them.
One gentleman in Stanmore is a Virgin pilot who flys all over the world regularly and is a neighbor of the candidate he has preferenced.

Often the stooge is financed to do the job by the preferred other.
Voters are completely hoodwinked.

Moore for Sydney Lord Mayor. None of them have any hope of replacing her.

One obvious alternative is to bin the votes for the candidates
that don’t get a significant percentage of the votes but that
doesn’t work very well at all with above the line voting and
grouped candidates.
