I have always favoured a tiered EU and Ukraine's bid is the best opportunity to achieve that.

Having a Core EU plus the hangers-on who take but don't believe in the political federation itself is the only way the EU can move forward without being held back by those resisting it.

The EU were suckered into expanding membership by Britain without understanding that adding members who should never have been allowed to join would hold them back. Through embracing empire building they trapped themselves in that quagmire and this is their chance to free themselves from it.

I am all for it. Not just because I believe it's better for the EU, but will make it easier for what's left of the UK to rejoin when Brits finally turn against brexit.
