I while back when I ordered something from Amazon, they said "Oh, we've
signed you up for a free trial of Amazon Prime."

As I expected, they then started charging me for the Prime membership
once the free period ended. I can't imagine how Amazon think that's
remotely lawful. I've got that refunded, and dobbed them in to the ACCC.

Still, it's something people might want to watch out for.

Sylvia.

That’s always optional, you are free to not have that.

It said you were free to cancel the Prime membership
at any time and you were too stupid to do that.

Most aren't actually as stupid as you.

Amazon have done this to me also only by looking at credit card
statement I notice, they refund ok but it's annoying.
Also happens with Kindle they sign me up for $30 (I think) a month
library, trouble is they do in fine print have some blurb added when
you pay for books, they auto add it to their pay now. Never warn "are
you sure"

WinZip also are now nag-wear messages popping up even when you are not
using it always buy their latest crap.
Downloaded Malwarebytes it came in WinZip and installed the latest
demanding payment for that version registration.

This is common with "free trials" where the onus is on you to cancel
if desired. Like banks, much money is made from sheer apathy.

Yes, the specific issue I had was being signed up for the trial without
my consent, even though they informed me that they'd done it.

I cannot distribute letters telling my neighbours that they'll owe me
money in future unless they take some action. That's not how contract
law works.

Yes. Such practices were not uncommon. They were always questionable.
Then laws were passed to make it abundantly clear that this was unlawful.

Else rightly said that they tell you when they do that.

You must have ignored that.

Nope. I have in fact chosen it deliberately to get free or cheaper shipping
from the USA and have set a reminder to cancel it before I am billed.

You can do that repeatedly too.

> Also happens with Kindle they sign me up for $30 (I think) a month

Never seen that either and I have both a Paperwhite
and by extra ebooks every single week.

Never get that. And the card that I pay for the Amazon purchases
with because they don't do ebay tells me with all purchases
about the charge by SMS and I would notice any extra charges.

> Never warn "are you sure"

You don't get that when you deliberately tick that box.

And you don't with the purchase either. In fact the one click
which I almost always use is quite literally one click with Amazon.

Don't use it anymore.

Don't use Malwarebytes either.

Its even worse with that shit rag The Australian.

You have to cancel it a full week before the trial runs out
and that is only mentioned in the fine print in the T&Cs
that you allegedly agree to when you sign up for it.

And the trial isn't free either, tho it is much cheaper than the normal
charge.

And the buggers won't reverse the charge either.

If you paid using PayPal, PayPal will reverse the charge with a phone call.
