I see before me!
Not really it was the business end of one of these:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/Graureiher_Grey_Heron.jpg

He seemed so interested in my two large Rudd and Shubunkin in my pond.
He was so interested that I was able to get to within about 3 metre
before he took off. The fish were quite safe as they have 1 cm black
netting across the whole pond surface area.
Aren't those herons such beautiful birds when you get to see them
from quite close to.
Incidentally, I added the netting to the pond to keep some orfe in
the pond, not to keep the fish safe from preditors.

They are lovely birds but you are right to protect the fish even if that
wasn't the original intention

Herons have a good memory of where they can feed.
My brother had a well-stocked pond. Then a heron found it. He spotted it
using the pond as a larder more than once in the day, and went out the
next day to get some wire netting to protect the fish. By the time he
got back with it and put it over the pond to keep the fish safe, there
were only two fish left!

The heron came back a few times afterwards, until it worked out that it
couldn't find a way of getting back to the fish. It hasn't been back since.

Jim
