We work up to a minor flood in the kitchen this morning.

I thought I’d relate the reason - others may like to check their plumbing.

Our dishwasher waste is plumbed into the kitchen sink waste - one of those
connectors integrated into the U bend assembly. It has been installed since
the ‘new’ kitchen was fitted over 10 years ago.

We’ve never had a problem. No blockages, leaks, drips, smells etc. I’ve
swapped the hose a few times when we’ve replaced the dishwasher but the
actual fitting has been fine.

Then, as I said, we found the kitchen a wash. At first I had no idea where
the water was coming from - there was no obvious flow when we arrived on
the scene.

On clearing the cupboard, the problem was obvious, the ‘nut’ securing the
spigot to the U bend assembly had unscrewed itself and the spigot and pipe
were disconnected from the U bend.

Easy to fix and it seems to have happened on the rise cycle, the puddle was
‘clean’ water.

I assume the flexing of the pipe had gradually unscrewed the nut, it is
located somewhere it couldn’t be ‘knocked” etc. I used a cable tie to
secure the pipe to, hopefully, prevent a repeat in the future.

I’ve not used this kind of fitting before. In the garage I use a long drop
pipe and bottom U for the washing machine and have used anti syphon valves
on pipes in kitchens.

I’m not suggesting the fittings don’t work etc- it has been fine for 10+
years- but I will be checking that nut now and then.
