Truss says the government intends to introduce legislation to make changes to the Northern Ireland protocol in the coming weeks.

Setting out what the new bill will contain, she said it would put in place the necessary measures to lessen the burden on trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Labour's shadow minister for Europe Stephen Doughty says it was the government that signed a Brexit deal that included the Northern Ireland Protocol which would require some trade checks in the Irish Sea.

He says now the government is trying to change the position on that agreement, saying Prime Minister Boris Johnson negotiated the deal, signed it and ran an election campaign on it, and must make it work.

Sinn Fein President Mary Lou McDonald says the foreign secretary's announcement shows the UK government's intention to "legislate to break the law".

McDonald says "it is the stuff of a rogue state"

Truss is asserting there must be two paths into Northern Ireland; one for goods which will stay in Northern Ireland, and another for those which pass onward into the EU.

Truss is insisting the EU must accept this proposal. She says it is sensible and practical there is no legitimate reason the EU can reject it. But that's simply a propaganda lie, a false narrative created to support the Junta's position..

The EU rejects it because there is no mechanism to ensure goods said to be only going to Northern Ireland won't end up in the EU, no way to stop criminals pretending goods are for Northern Ireland to avoid checks on goods intended for the EU.

Truss's proposal is as ridiculous as telling police they must not stop and search anyone who tells them they aren't carrying anything illegal, must not arrest or question anyone who says they have done nothing wrong.

Johnson knew his "oven ready deal" would necessitate checks on everything going from the UK to Northern Ireland. He knew this wouldn't be friction free, would create huge problems; the EU and everyone else pointed that out to him. But Johnson shrugged and signed the legally binding agreement, claimed brexit was "done".

He's now trying to have his cake and eat it. The lying serial liar had that in mind all along. He only signed the deal so he could pretend brexit was done while planning to renege on the agreement later.

He knew he couldn't get the deal he wanted so signed anyway, always intending to renege on that, coerce the EU into giving him the deal he had wanted, scoring a victory in getting what he wanted, and in having taken the EU for mugs in the process.

No matter how strongly he or other Brits believe the EU are obliged to give us what we want; the EU sees it very differently, know exactly what game is afoot and the conman they are up against.

The Junta may think it's a clever trick to pretend the threat to peace from what the Junta is doing is purely because the EU won't give the Junta what it wants. But only the anti-EU will believe that.

It's basically terrorism; don't give us what we want and we will destroy the peace.

We really have sunk that low.

Northern Ireland Committee Chair (and Conservative MP) Simon Hoare quotes Margaret Thatcher, saying: "The first duty of government is to uphold law - if it tries to bob, duck and weave around that duty when it is inconvenient... then nothing is safe - not home, not liberty, not life itself."

"I find it extraordinary that a Tory government needs to be reminded of that," he says

Alliance MP Stephen Farry urges the UK not to act unilaterally arguing it would damage the UK's reputation including with the US.

Former shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn says threatening to unilaterally break an international treaty could undermine trust in the UK.

He warned this may result in trade retaliation from the EU.

The Liberal Democrats' Layla Moran says however the government dresses up its bill, unilaterally changing the terms of an agreement is breaking it.

She warns there will be "real consequences" for families across the UK if the UK gets into a trade war with the EU. She urges the foreign secretary to be honest about what prices households will have to pay if tariffs are risen.
