Why would Russia give up what they have paid such a heavy price to secure ?

It's idiocy to think they would; Zelensky is simply wanting to have his cake and eat it. It doesn't work that way.

Russia isn't going to retreat, abandon pro-Russian Ukrainians to be executed and oppressed by Ukrainian fascists, nor sit back while neo-Nazi government ministers cheer those executions, call for more of them.

Zelensky betrayed Ukrainians in the East and now he's paying the price. He should have allowed them their independence, their right to self-determination, rather than deny them that.

NATO's plan was to get Russia to invade, to take the East, have Ukrain settle for that. It's why their peace proposal is how it is, why they refused Ukraine NATO membership for almost a decade.

It still seems to me that Zelensky hasn't got a clue about what game NATO is playing, no comprehension that his country has been played for suckers.

If he thinks NATO is fighting on behalf of Ukraine, can even afford to, he's a bigger fool than I imagined. That's not what it's about. Ukraine is just a sacrificial pawn. NATO don't want to see Ukraine fall, hence their peace proposal, but they won't prevent Ukraine falling if Zelensky chooses that. It's win-win for NATO either way, more so if Ukraine does fall.
