Daughter in Law and youngest (16) grand-daughter have been over from
Oz for a few of weeks visiting friends and relatives down in the west
country. DIL contracted Covid whilst over here so was extremely limited
in what she could do and where she could go. She was so ill she didn't
want to do anything anyway. Eventually she was allowed to fly home.
But something went wrong with the flight resulting in a 24 hour stay at
a Paris airport. Eventually they were able to fly on to Dubai. Mid
flight DIL passed out and was unconscious for some time. Grand-daughter
was extremely distraught as you can imagine. Upon landing at Dubai she
was rushed to the medical centre and spent 24 hours there with tubes
sticking in almost every place you could stick a tube. They are back in
Perth now but she is now taking lots of anti-biotics, and is still
having difficulty breathing, so I reckon she might not be out of
hospital for long. I'm told that Grand-daughter is now starting to
suffer from similar first symptoms that DIL suffered over here in
England a few weeks ago. I dread to think how many other people could
have been exposed to DIL especially as they were flying in that tin can
and breathing the recycled air. Now to crown it all it seems there may
be an issue with their health insurances due to the delays on the
journey home.

Sounds horrendous, FN. I hope all concerned are fit and well again
very soon and the insurance is sorted favourably. What a dreadful
outcome to what should have been a very enjoyable break.

I read a scientific paper recently that suggested airplane cabin air
is not as good as the airlines would have you believe (HEPA filters
notwithstanding). The authors suggested that large, tall spaces (think
a gymnasium with wall bars at school!) has cleaner air.

Don't ask me for a cite because I cannot remember where I found it.

Neither are fully fit and well yet and the problem in some form of
bronchitis. They are both on anti-bis and DIL still having difficulty,
but she is sounding a lot perkier this morning.

Re: aircraft cabin air can be much better, but that relies on better
more regular maintenance of the filtration system, but we all know how
reliable all maintenance can be.

Pleased there is some improvement and hope complete recovery is not
too far away.
Strange how Covid affects people in different ways. Despite everyone
having a negative test within 24 hours of boarding, we both caught it
on our last cruise. Thankfully, and most likely because of the
vaccinations,it didn't affect us seriously.

All cabin air isn't recirculated though!
A percentage of the air is continuously expelled and replaced with
fresh air from the compressor stage of a main engine, or an APU
(auxiliary power unit). The recirculated volume is very finely
filtered.
The air has proved to be less polluted than normal indoor atmosphere.
