That may be an exaggeration.

I've seen both dead by the roads around here. Judging by the spoor we
only get hedgehogs in the garden, but there are badger trails in the area.

I've seen neither alive.

Friends on the English/Welsh borders had 4 hedgehogs regularly visiting
their garden every night. However, their local Hedgehog charity had too
many underweight hogs at just before winter that wouldn't have survived
hibernation or a cold winter. They were looking for volunteers to over
winter many of them. Not necessary a cheap undertaking as it required
something like a heated shed and 4 months of food.

Only thing I've seen alive or dead round here are badgers. And bloody moles

This has just appeared on one of the groups I read - type in your
postcode for hedgehog holes/sightings in your area. I think the figures
at the bottom of the map are for the whole country.

I should probably give those a go: one concern is the panels changing shape
with temperature and humidity. Those springs look like they might expand to
take up the slack, while a wooden wedge might not.
